Solar Electricity Frequently Asked Questions

Solar Electricity Frequently Asked Answers
Will I qualify for rebates?

Yes, all customers of investor owed and municipal utilities of California are eligible to choose one of the following rebates:

1) An upfront rebate called an Expected Performance Rebate that calculates your shading and system direction (southern exposure is ideal) and as part of our turn-key solutions Aztec Solar will deduct your utility rebate from your total system cost and carry the rebate until the utility pays.

2) A five -year rebate payment based on the performance of your solar electric system. You are paid monthly for the energy your system produces at a fixed rebate determined at the time of your approved application.

For more information about rebates visit your utility website:

Is my home right for solar?

Homes with roofs facing south, west or southwest are usually good candidates for a solar electric system. In addition, homes that have limited shading on their property will experience a higher production level from their system. Aztec Solar will provide you with options to maximize your property through a free home energy analysis, complete with an estimate for your best solar solutions.

Will I still have an electric bill with a solar system?

This depends on your goals with your solar electric system:

1) A Complete Solution: pay more upfront and eliminate your monthly electric bill. Your monthly bill will start around $5/month minimum for interconnection and surcharge fees.

2) A Smart Solution: purchase a properly sized solar electric system that covers your usage in the higher more expensive tiers, bringing your electric bill to a predictable monthly cost for the life of your system.

3) A Total Solution: reduce and/or eliminate both your electric and water heating (natural gas, electric, or propane) by purchasing a solar electric system and a solar water heating system. Aztec Solar Experts will be available to advise on the best solution for your solar goals.

Will my property tax increase?

No, even with the addition of solar upgrades to your home your property taxes will not increase, yet many homeowner with solar have experienced increased property appraisal values.

How long do solar systems last?

PV modules and technology have been around for 50 years. With no moving parts they have a life expectancy of 35+ years. The PV panels come with a 25-year warranty, with the balance of the system having a 10-year warranty.

What type of solar electric systems does Aztec Solar install?

Aztec Solar specializes in Total Solar Solutions, combining the use of solar electricity and solar water heating systems for optimum benefits. We integrate grid-connected solutions for both roof and ground mounted installation for all types of residential and commercial applications.

Why is solar power good for the environment?

Sun-generated power is clean - no pollution, noise or fossil fuels. A typical 3 kilowatt system will eliminate 101 tons of carbon dioxide over 25 years, equivalent of 327,972 miles not driven or 1.7 acres of trees planted.

What is the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)?

The Federal Government offers a savings of 30% of the entire project cost of your solar electric (and solar water heating) system, to be deducted from your tax liability in the year of installation and if needed for up to seven years following.

What is Net Metering?

This program allows utility customers that have solar electric systems to theoretically turn their meter backwards when they generate electricity in excess of their demand. This offset means that customers receive retail prices for the excess electricity they generate and are credited on their monthly bill.

Why should I borrow money to pay for solar?

You already must pay a monthly utility bill for energy, essentially financing an indefinite, variable rate loan from your utility company. Installing a solar power system allows you to refinance this loan at a fixed rate and term and have your loan payments go towards ownership of a valuable asset.
